Can't you just take sick days to interview elsewhere like normal people? ;-)
I have to confess my bias here... I've been doing software development in C for n years, for large values of n. And I had a hell of a time finding work in 2004... and even then I ended up with the same people I had left the year earlier.
I did learn something valuable though. Cross your bridges and *then* burn them...
