From my Twitter stream:
09:02amWhy, exactly, am I willing to pay $25 for 5 drive trays when I need 2 for a server I don't even need to get running?
09:02amwell, ok, because it's the only sunfire server I have, and I'd /like/ to get it running. But still! $5/tray! I only need 2! Geez.
09:07amAll unwatched movies and tv and podcasts, plus all the playlists I care about, and my new ipod still has just under 6gb free. AWESOME.
10:48amI never used to bitch about "fucking tourists!" so much. I think I'm getting old.
10:56amAnother bad night's sleep. My eyes want to be taken out and replaced. But, I'm at work. I had a rice crispy bar as a reward.
10:56am60% of the floor is empty and dark. It feels abandoned, dark. I like it.
10:57am@JosieNutter: have fun.
11:05amJust bought 5 drive trays at $4.10 each. I can live with that, but still, geez.
11:17amAnybody know of a Kill-A-Watt equivalent that can deal with 240V 30A? I'd rather not build one, ya know?
12:38pmok, NOW I'm getting amazon ship notifications AFTER the item arrives!
01:34pm@dianthus: ... you made me hungry.
02:48pmdoes sprint.com load for anybody else? in FF and safari it just hangs. and hangs. and hangs.
02:55pmwireless data plans have gotten more expensive. maybe a stompbox isn't the right solution anymore. fucking wireless companies.
02:57pmok, so, at&t and sprint appear to no longer offer an unlimited-bandwidth wireless data-only plan?
02:57pmnor verizon. fuck.
03:23pm@firesign3000: yeah. it wasn't like this 6 months ago. t-mo still offers unlimited data, but they're only EDGE.
03:28pm@firesign3000: I was all planning to switch away from tmo for data and go to a wireless broadband plan & a stompbox. guess that plan's dead

The following is a post I started composing this afternoon:

in which our hero asks for advice on wireless-to-wifi routers )

I paused while writing it to go update my little list of what prices the locally-covering wireless carriers charge for their unlimited data plans. And what did I find out? They don't. Of Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, only T-Mo still offers an unlimited data plan, and they're only EDGE. The others all cap at 5GB/mo. Presumably to prevent you from running bittorrent and other p2p crap over their precious networks.

My grand plan was to drop t-mobile's data service and switch to a high-speed network, use the stompbox to share out that connection to all of my devices (laptops, N800, iphone, everything) wherever I am, and go happily about my way.

Now, I don't know what sort of bandwidth I'd use. My iphone is currently reporting 26.9mb sent and 236mb received, which is either since I started using it (seems low) or since I upgraded to 2.0 on the 29th (seems high, but not hugely). I'd probably use a little bit more than I currently do if I had the new setup, due to using it with other devices as well. So, would the 5gb cap be a problem? I don't know. I kinda doubt it.

But that's not the point. I'm not willing to pay more per month for 'broadband-like speeds' if it's got a byte cap. I'm not willing to pay for a connection with a byte-cap at all, frankly. It's the principle of the thing.

So, this plan is mostly scrapped. I'll probably still buy one of the routers anyway, at some point in the future, but whatever urgency there was to doing so, if that word can be applied here, has gone.

edit: I should note also that, while I didn't make a note of the current pricing for these unacceptable plans, I seem to recall that they're priced more or less the same as the old unlimited plans. I'd have to go look, but can't be bothered at the moment.
