So, I just called Speakeasy to ask some questions about their T1 deal. So, the free-install isn't the real deal apparently, it's the $399/m for the life of the contract price. Huh. Well, ok. Still free install, which is peachy by me. Even the hardware has a 100% rebate. And I learned something: DSL (ADSL /and/ SDSL) are apparently half-duplex. I did not know that. [This wouldn't be much of an issue if I wasn't running a dozen websites and other servers that were constantly sending content OUT. So it's all YOUR fault.] T1 is full duplex, which I was aware of, and thus just doubling the line speed will still be - likely - more than double the real download speed. Plus, we get the SLA and all the other wonderful stuff.

Anyway. If I get the line and later decide it's not worth the extra expense, I can downgrade back to DSL at no penalty or cost. I can order it now, to lock in the price that ends today, and cancel in 72 hours without it costing anything either.

So, I went ahead and ordered it.

[btw, the inability to use <s> in titles is annoying. That was supposed to be "Suck my hugereasonably-sized fucking pipe".]

We have a T1 from Speakeasy out in Duvall. I can't campare it to DSL, but it does blow the doors off dialup!

Before you change try
Speakeasy's speed test so you can see the difference you are getting.
I am not at home now, but we get slightly over 1.4 in both directions.

It takes about 3 months to get your hardware rebate back btw.

Hee, I forgot about that.

498k down, 232k up, at the moment.

And yeah, I can afford to wait for the rebate. Won't be /thrilled/ about it, but I can afford it.

Did you inquire about IP space? Last I checked, their T1s were all-you-can-eat at least up to a class C.

I'm still very interested in colo'ing at your place -- what do you think a reasonable price would be?

I inquired after the fact. It comes with 16 (I've got 10 now), but I'll have to renumber. Which is annoying, but doable. If I time it all right, I might be able to switch over transparently.

And I'll have some spare IPs, and we can talk about colo. Price, I don't know. I'll get back to you. ::)

The other day I thought, "Why not have both cable and DSL, with router choosing appropriate link if one is slower or down?"

This concludes otherdaythought.

I actually spent a good fraction of a second pondering getting cable internet just for our use, and keep the servers on the DSL. But then I rememebered that the cable company is evil, and charges - last I checked - more for their internet if you don't have their cable service, which I don't want. Also their ToS tend towards to provoke a "fuck off and die" reaction from me. So, yeah. I hate the cable company with an irrational passion.
