"It's a refusal to take reality at face value, in favor of a picture that conforms to what we want to be true."

This is the difference between a survivor and a statistic.

Those that can't handle reality when stuck in a life raft surrounded by sharks eventually will stand up and say something like "I'm going to the 7-Eleven for a soda, I'll be right back." They step over the side, scream in horrible pain as they are eaten alive and the rest on the raft occupants look at each other and ask "Do we try to save him?" Not that they have any tools or hope of doing so. (from the book: Deep Survival)

Unfortunately, it's much harder for our delusional leaders to step out of the life raft in this case so we have to keep listening to them say, "Democracy and peace is over the next wave, we just have to keep shooting up the countryside a little more."
