So, I'm not asking for advice. I'm not asking what I should do. I'll figure that out later. No, I want to know what you would do in an analogous situation. Leave a comment, eh?

Suppose a cute girl (or boy, or spivak, or robot, whatever you prefer) contacts you thru an online site. Just a basic one-click 'hi', without actually saying anything. You, on your way out the door when you get it, reply in kind with the intention of following up later. Then you forget to do so. When you finally do, you find they already have, asking "And then?". You reply, explain why you hadn't replied yet, and say a few other things, like "like the hair", and "Do you work at , I think I recognize you.". You also give your real email, 'cause hey, you'll reply a lot faster that way. She (he/it/they) reply to this message, by email. You reply to that. Then, nothing.

Ditto. Wait, and plan to forget about him/her.

Replying to a message that is just "hi" with anything substantial is never a good move anyway, i figure. If they're actually paying attention they'd have put some effort in to begin with.

Well, in the specific case from which the example is derived, the site is okcupid, and the 'hi' is a 'woo', which is supposed to imply ... /something/. At least, if the recipient hasn't disabled them (which also implies something).

It's my understanding that sites like that have a lot of this sort of thing; people just lose interest and get distracted and such. I would not do anything, of course, but I wouldn't be on okcupid in the first place. :)

and we get distracted. (and /where/ did this year go... let me look...) I have problems keeping up with people I know and like! Hang out long enough and the paths cross again -- if they're going to.

Besides, "waiting is" in such a Martian way.

Meh, they get written off. If they come back, then I'd cautiously talk to them, not expecting much.

Why.. start emailing them every hour, of course!

Oh.. but be creative.. email them every 61 minutes. See if they notice the effort. If they don't, blame them for not caring.

bah..

If people don't say anything but hi, they're pretty much bored and using you (general) for their amusement. Which makes me file them under the "go to hell" pile because chances are they won't be there for you (general) unless they are bored.
