Helpful hint: Never buy a fountain pen for less than $100, unless it's disposable.
Perhaps more helpful hint: Never buy a non-disposable fountain pen unless it's for show.

I use a BIC pen. I go through them like water. One time in grad school -- I remember this from 1992 -- I had this seminar teacher, Felicity Nussbaum, very famous in her field of 18th C. Women's Lit, and she had this very fancy spaceage pen that she used in class and her office. I clung my BIC pen in my fist and scrawled random notes. (I didn't deserve her. Maybe if I'd gotten a better pen.)

I find considerable joy in, on those rare occasions I write, writing with a fountain pen. But the $30 job I've been keeping at work just went into the trash at high velocity, as I was on my way to a sink. I'm sick of it never working when I need it, and getting ink all over my hands when it does.

I've got a $130 retractable, which I'm indecently fond of, but because I store it point-up in my coat pocket, it's also rarely ready to write when I need it. But it's never spit on me, except when I did something stupid like shake it.

The best things ever are Pilot Varsity. They're a couple bucks each, come in lots of colors, and are disposable fountain pens. I've bought a decent supply of purple ones and a couple black ones a few years ago. They last ages.

I've got four fisher spacepens, most of which live in drawers or backpack pockets. One is attached to my moleskin, which itself lives in a pocket of my backpack. They're nice to write with, but I rarely use them.

I am in love with my Lamy Logo fountain pen, which isn't commonly sold in this country. It's a thin, light steel-nibbed pen that lists for around $40. With a converter installed it does well with a range of bottled inks. Here's a seller on eBay.

I've liked the Lamy fine nib in general, but their other inexpensive pens tend to be large plasticky things.

Oh, I don't know. I'm rather happy with some of the student pens from Europe. Of course, I buy them on eBay, because they're too damn expensive and marketed for a different market here.
