Would anybody like to have Metis, the original MidgardMOO server? It's an old minitower case. a pentium, new enough to have mmx, iirc. I believe it has 48mb of ram. there's a floppy. There is no CD drive, and the hard drive has been removed. the network card has been removed. power supply is still there. The machine spontaneously stopped working one day, and I had a new host almost ready anyway, so I didn't bother fixing it, I just moved the moo to the bigger better server (Vodopan). I have no idea what's wrong with it, or if it's fixable.
It's free to anybody who wants it. I'd even consider delivering.

Sep. 29th, 2004 04:11 pmI want to buy an iPod. But, instead of doing that, I moved all my spare money into my savings account. We (read 'I') now have about $900 saved up for the hot tub enclosure. I need about $6000 to pay it off completely, and if I finance it, I'd like it to be for as litttle as possible (given we're still paying on the windows, and loree's got a car payment now, and etc etc etc).
And then, somebody on the for-sale list at work is offering a Fiat. I don't need another car, I have better things to spend money on, but it's a FIAT. Most of you may not understand what this means. Those of you who do, I trust you understand the pain that comes with not buying a Fiat that is suddenly available, in working condition, and cheap.
Anybody want to make a substantive donation to the gazebo fund?

Jul. 30th, 2004 11:19 pmSo, according to the livejournal terms of service, to balance the 99% of my posts that are angsty or bitchy, 1% must be happy. I still think the quizes should count towards the happy quota, but apparently they're considered 'fluff' and don't count either way. But, anyway, here it is.
Life's been pretty decent of late, if you discount a few things. There was the drop in the stock price, there was running out of money (like, completely out of money, due to some improperly-accounted-for one-time costs), but it's all good. The stock has leveled out, even recovered slightly. I moved some money around and found a missing refund check I'd forgotten to deposit.
But work has been going well. I fixed in content something that would've been difficult - at best REALLY inconvenient - to do in software, and did it in such a way as to make another project easier. I went thru and detail-scoped my main project - which I haven't really had a chance to work on this week, much to my PM's distress - and discovered there's a lot less left to do than even I thought.
I had three cute young females over to hot tub with me, sisters no less, and one really can't help but feel good about that sort of situation.
Then today I got my newton syncing with my powerbook, which is convenient.
Then I went to a going-away party for a friend who's leaving town. The going-away part in itself isn't really so happy, but the reasons for it are and it was a good party, and there were cute cats, and some interesting discussions, and I knew at least two people there, which is always good.
I am, at the moment, content.

MOOs and other services back up
Jul. 5th, 2002 01:24 pmSo, Vodopan is working again, with a spare processor I had. That's the last of the spare processors, I'm afraid, so the next computer to fry one is hosed.
The MOOs are back up. I'm building a new kernel, so they'll go down for a few minutes later today, but I'll give warning.
The database server is back up as well, so my journal, the invitotron, and the other database-backed services are all working again.

Midgard- and DownMOOers take note
Jul. 5th, 2002 01:41 amOk, so, Vodopan is hosed royally. I'm guessing some kind of hardware fault, probably processor- and heat-related. Kernel (2.4 on the drive, 2.2 and 2.4 on floppies) panics before even getting to the file system accessing stage. No good.
I pulled the drive, and was eventually able to access it on oort. It's a reiserfs filesystem, and oort is running 2.2, so I had to compile a 2.4 to be able to read it, but the moo databases are there and are safe. I pulled a full backup off to rigel just to be absolutely sure. So nothing should be lost.
But, I don't know what I'm going to do about hosting them. I think I've got another P2 sitting around, I can try tossing that into vode and seeing if the problem goes away. I can try running the moos on oort. Both of these will take time. I'm going to try doing it tomorrow in between other errands I have to run. I hope I can get them up by tomorrow evening, but can make no promises.
If the people running Down want to move to a new host, let me know and I can package up the files for you. Else, it'll be up when Mid's up.
