We filled out the online refi application with becu tonight. Submitted it. And got back an approval in less than 2 minutes. Freaky.

For anybody who doesn't or can't read [livejournal.com profile] loree's post, we've got some stuff left to do:

Tuesday - that's tomorrow: Demolition. The basement 'bathroom' needs its drywall ripped off. We'll try to ensure you don't die of any sort of toxicity. Self-inflicted claw-hammer wounds, we are not responsible for.

Thursday afternoon: The weather is supposed to temporarily desuckify, so we're going to attack the yard. You like weeding, right? Or butchering helpless invasive species? Or working on fences?

Saturday/Sunday: Finishing up with the devastation in the basement, and dealing with whatever's left: mucking out the garage, painting, rearranging the bodies in the crawlspace to make more room (it's getting crowded).. etc.

Let us know if/when you'll make it.

*sigh*

So. Today was spent installing the new disposal. Too many trips to the hardware store. Too much stress and strain and swearing. But it's in. dishwasher is running. sink drains well. Nothing leaks except the faucet, which we'll look at replacing tomorrow.

Still unaccomplished:
  • Reinstalling windows on Rukbat for [livejournal.com profile] lunar__angel (4 weeks overdue?).
  • Reinstalling linux on Rigel (I'm thinking Ubuntu Edgy Eft) (1.5 years overdue).
  • Upgrading mysql on Vodopan (I'm thinking perhaps switching vode to Edgy as well, as gentoo's frustrating me a little in terms of getting mysql 5 out of ~x86) (6 months overdue).
  • Finish hooking up the A/V equipment in the new entertainment center, including rehanging all the speakers (1 week overdue).
  • Cleaning the library, including reorganizing the bookshelves (several years overdue).
  • Cleaning the bunker. Again. (always overdue)
  • Burning the house down (7 years overdue).
  • Killing the entire human species, en mass (16 years overdue).

  1. I replaced the batteries in, cleaned off, and reset all the clocks on the Wall O' Clocks. Also set the living room clock and the bedroom clocks.

  2. Attempted to figure out where the drainage for the dishwasher was clogged. Discovered that the repair of the dishwasher also fixed the light and disposal power problems. Go fig. However, the clog was not where the repair guy thought, so I smell like various nasty stuff for no good reason. The problem has to do with the hose that carries the dishwasher output into the disposal, which appears to be quite clogged. Further, in verifying this, I've ensured it won't go back onto the disposal, since it appears all that was holding it on there was several centuries of accumulated yuck. So I need a new hose. And I need to either clean off the input port on the disposal or replace the disposal. This latter is something we've been wanting to do for a long time, and this seems like it might be a good time for it. But it's a lot more effort than I'm up to putting in right now.

  3. Promised myself I'd get an email out to everybody currently on the party invite list to say "hey, this is coming. which of these dates would work for you to be in seattle?". But I've hit a complete block trying to compose the email. I'll probably have to write several, since there are people on this list I haven't seen since high school or college, and many from out of state.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuckity fuck fucking fucked fuck.

The toilet isn't draining properly. I plunged it, still no joy.

Hm. Ok, no, it's draining, just REALLY SLOWLY.

Go downstairs to listen to the pipe, see if I can hear where it's clogged.

Oh.

There's a puddle, about 7" deep at the back wall (there's a sudden slope), extending about 10' out, into the piles of laundry. Thankfully, the laundry is mostly in baskets. Thankfully, the water is clear, except for the floor detritus floating in it. Unfortunately, the sump pump drains into the sink, which is not draining, so much as leaking onto the floor.

Shit.

[livejournal.com profile] loree and I are going to the Monaco for the night, what with the enjoying going to the bathroom and all.

I'm glad I didn't buy the RAID yet...

So, Orkin came today to install a new vapor barrier in the basement crawlspace, as the old one has been covered with rat/mouse droppings and is just a great big Vacancy sign for the neighborhood. We've got a separate appointment /next/ thursday to do the attic (where they've been nesting in the insulation. it's.. nasty.). While they're crawling around under the house, the installers find termite damage. It's just a piece of a foundation post that a support post is resting on, it hasn't compromised the structure, but we need to deal with it before it does. SO, now we'll have TWO crews here next thursday, one doing the attic, and another taking care of the termites and finishing the vapor barrier work.

The original rough estimate was about $5k for all the work. It turned out the attic wasn't nearly as big as he thought it was, once he got in there to measure today, which cut about $2k off the total, but then the termite work adds $1900. But, the good news is, it's guaranteed, and monitored, and if it doesn't work they'll redo the treatment free.

So, the termite problem shouldn't be a problem, and the rodent problem should be fixed within a matter of months. Possibly less, if we can track down all the places they're getting in. We've already foamed a couple of holes.

Anyhoo, grump!

The home improvement run continues. Statewide is doing a thing this month wherein they're giving a special discount on any window contracts signed before the end of the year. So Gavin came out again tonight, priced out the windows in the bunker (which we've long since decided was the next phase of window replacement), and gave us a new estimate. Between the $458 extra off for doing it now and the various other discounts he's already put together for us brought the total price down from $11+k to $7,888 after taxes. A total of 8 windows in 6 openings, including uncovering the window in the north wall that some previous owner covered over (really. from outside you can see the window, and thru it to the inside of the wall.). Two solid windows for the little openings, two double hungs, and two twin double hungs (two windows in a single large opening, like we have in the sunroom).

So this will be a very good thing. Should take care of a lot of the thermal problems in my office, and make it possible to move the servers up there (as soon as we take care of the electrical problem). And hopefully I can throw the next round of stock options vests at it pretty hard. 10 year financing is nice on the monthly payments, but paying them off will make it easier to do round three (I'm quite keen to get the bedrooms done next). Or we could start looking at redoing the roof (which desperately needs it, and the estimate we got for it would include recreating the original roofline on the existing structure, which should seriously help the house's value). I'm thinking new front/back doors are next, tho. Desperately need them.

I need more rules...

Rules of the Hot Tub

1. What happens in the hot tub stays in the hot tub.
2. ...Unless it really does stay in the hot tub, in which case you have to clean it up.
3. Clothing is optional inside the gazebo at all times. Keep the northern windows closed, however.
4. If it was attached to you before you got in, make sure it's still there afterward.
5. Do not hang from the crossbeams.
6. If you're the last person out, you are responsible for turning off the jets and light, and closing the cover.
7. There is no rule seven.
8. Do not set the gazebo on fire.
9. Do not attack the gazebo. It gets angry.
10. No drowning of weasels.

And perhaps some rewriting. Comment with suggestions, if you've any.

EDITS
2. ...Unless it really does stay in the hot tub, in which case you have to clean it up. Seriously, no bodily fluids.

11. No ritual sacrifice, ritual suicide, or ritual deflowerings.
12. ...unless you take pictures. And then only of the last one. And not in the tub.
13. ...... and you still have to clean it up.

14. All conflicts between hottubbers are to be settled with a duel, at a time and place and with weapons chosen by the hosts.

10. No drowning of weasels. Or ferrets. Or anybody else.
15. No dunking. Except of Oreo cookies. And then only in milk. And keep the milk out of the hot tub. And the crumbs.

So, people showed up (thanks [livejournal.com profile] kerri_tgrl, [livejournal.com profile] evildave, [livejournal.com profile] cow, and ron!) and we got started around 3, finished a bit after 4. Some cleanup work left to be done, but it should be good enough for the permits.

Loree didn't let me help much, but I still hurt a lot.

Ok, it depends how you define fun. We rented a walk-behind trencher to dig holes in our yard. BUT, last night I injured both my wrists while falling down, so I don't think I'll be able to manage the whole job. Anybody wanna come run the trencher for us? I'll buy you lunch/dinner/something?

So, the guy from Jorve came back to talk to us, with a proposal. They can't do metal at all, no way, he talked to three guys. But, they can fix the roofline on the dormer, restore the kneebraces along the front, replace the three-tab with a new 50-year composite, etc etc blah blah, for about $25k. Which is a lot better than I was expecting. We can afford it, but we've decided not to. We'll pay for the hot tub work as soon as possible, pay off the joint credit card, then focus on saving up for the gazebo and throwing money towards the windows as convenient. Then do the roof next year.

Stuff

Today was busy. I sawed up the swingset while loree got the chainsaw working. Then we cut down the tree next to the house (it had broken in half during the ice storm in january). Then we tied up the shrub (really, a collection of small trees growing from a pair of stumps) next to the garage, and cut it down. Then we dug out the feet of the swingset.. four posts, set in foot-plus deep/foot across concrete. THAT was a lot of work.

Then the 1-800-GOT-JUNK guys came, and filled up a truck with the wood, as well as most of the frames from the tents. We'll have to call them out again later to get the concrete and such. But the yard looks SOOO much better than it did.

And now, I've just placed an order with JList. I managed to NOT order a region-free dvd player, tempting tho it was. I /did/ order a giant plush Domokun. They have to order it themselves, then ship it from japan. So I'll likely see it in a few years. ::)

Le sigh

So, Sedna's keyboard started getting weirder and weirder. Up, Right, Backtick, and F12 aren't performing their designated funtions.. they're acting like I hit an entire COLUMN of keys at once.. frex, ` gives me F2, 2, W, S, X, Command. So, uh.. yeah. I took her back to the genius bar. The guy tried booting off their harddrive, to see if it was a software problem (I'd already verified it wasn't, but sure). So, he can either order a new keyboard, and when it arrives we try it and see if that's the problem - but if it's the logic board, we get to wait again - OR we can send it in and let the repair folks fix it. The turnaround on sending it in is likely faster than ordering parts into the store... and I /can/ live without her for a while.. so, fine. Send it in. $310 in free warranty service, whee. 5-10 business days (it's frequently been less, but he can't promise anything better). so, I'll miss her, but hopefully she will come back happy and ready to work.

Meanwhile, I picked up an Airport card for Cygnus (the mac Cube). She liked it. Of course, she still doesn't have a working CD drive, so I gotta do something about that. I'm thinking of buying an omnidrive (read/write cd and all dvd formats).. somebody sells one made for the cube for $350ish. Dunno if I really need to write DVDs on the cube tho (how many machines do I /need/ to be able to write DVDs from?). I just need to be able to, say, install Panther (Cygnus has Jaguar right now).

In other news, we reinstalled two of the air conditioners. I'm upstairs in my office /right now/. That's right, 6pm at night, and the upstairs is habitable! I'm actually a little chilly, 'cause the AC is in this room, and I'm not fully dressed. It's right around 70 in here, as opposed to the high-80s/low-90s it's been getting to.

Doing phase two of the windows will help a lot on the heat problem up here (phase two being all the windows in my office, along the front of the house), but the AC is battling successfully for now. We might need to add the windows in my guest room (south wall) to phase two, to really take care of the thermal issues up here, but we'll see. The Gazebo Issue is looking up, and we're not expecting it to cost as much as I'd feared, so we might be able to afford phase two this summer.

On the other hand (as the lights flicker from the AC kicking on), we might want to throw that money into redoing the electrical system. We need to do that anyway, since we want to move the server room upstairs (from the dining room into my office) eventually, and the electrical system just /will not/ support that. The UPSes are the only reason the AC doesn't pop the breaker every time it kicks on, and adding another UPS to the mix with a dozen computers on it is not my idea of a good plan.

Anyway...

Just for the hell of it - mostly - I applied for an Apple Instant Loan, which is backed by MBNA, with whom I've always felt I had a good relationship. I asked for a $4k line. (The machine I'm wanting is going to run $4300)

They came back with $3500 and 23.99% APR. I declined. There is, unfortunately, no "Decline with derisive laughter" button.

Then I called MBNA to see if they'd bump up the limit on my card, which would have the same effect (and only 9.97%). The appropriate department is, of course, closed. Stupid holidays.

I actually have /almost/ enough space on the card to buy the thing, and could clear up enough space pretty easily. The only reason I've been carrying the balance there is 'cause I was focusing on paying off the joint debts first. However, I worked out - in my little spreadsheet I'm using to track the joint debts - that we've got enough on-hand to pay off everything we need to pay off. All that would be left is the gazebo - which we haven't ordered yet so we don't owe anything - and the windows - which are financed for 10 years at about $63/mo, so we can wait and pay them off whenever we want.

We got our new windows. They're very nice. I took pictures while they were installing. We got rid of the crappy cheap warping casements and got twin double-hungs in both openings. PLUS, they created proper sills and framed them out VERY nicely to match the rest of the house. All we have to do is paint them and they'll be totally faboo.

Sunday, I woke up a bit after 7. First in the house. Mucked around online, played some xbox, then around 1130 or so loree and dana were awake enough to go to brunch. We went to Alki, of course. Then loree and I went to look at open houses, then to fry's.

There's a new house a block away from us. 3500 sqft, 2 months old, central vac, 3car garage, security system, intercoms, two floors, sound views, nice landscaping... Really nice. $600k? There abouts.

Then there was the 5000sqft on caphill. $900k, three floors plus basement, not much lawn, nowhere to put the hot tub except on top of the garage. but really very nice. Good location too. It'd be great for two or three couples.

Then there was the ex-garage for the giant grey tudor on aloha. The garage lot was separated in the 80s, and turned into a house. The location is wonderful, the yard is PERFECT - has a great place for a hot tub.. with a hot tub already in it - but the house is about half as big as we'd need. Loree commented that, if she decided to leave me, it'd be perfect.

So, to catch up.

Saturday, loree and I went to the seattle home show. Saw many cool things. Euroline doors and windows, the french doors are nice.. one will /tilt/ out to allow ventilation, plus they have built-in multi-point deadbolts - a feature many doors seem to have now. Vinyl fencing.. will solve our grafitti problem. commposite decking material.. our deck is in sad shape.. Wide-board hardwood flooring, very VERY nice...Landscape architects and water features and stonework, oh my.

Gazebos! We found one we really like. 12x16, redwood, metal roof with a skylight, lighting, storage, some decking to go around the tub. The show price was $1100 less than regular price, then the owner cut another $900 and gave us free delivery/install. Plus, we only have to put $1k now to hold the price for 11 months, and we can finance the rest when we call to finish the order. So, a damned good deal. We went for it. Also found a concrete guy i like, to do the pad. Now I just need to collect enough money for him and the electrician, get them talking to each other, and make it all happen. yay!

Also bought a cool fountain with an ultrasonic mister, looks like a bowl of icecubes - you'll see it at the bday party if you attend.

And, for my birthday, loree bought me a soda maker. My family had one of these way back when, and I drink enough soda that it could come in handy. It's basically a device for carbonating water. That, plus soda syrup and you can mix the soda yourself. Saves storage space for all the 2Ls, if nothing else, and it does work out a little cheaper.

Anyway, monday I got sick. I'm still home. Tried to work from home yesterday, wasn't very good at it. Took a sick day today.. it's merely respiratory at this point, but rather unpleasant.

But, I have a stereo that plays MP3s, and a book, and diet pepsi.
Oh, and the drugs. the drugs help too.

Today started really sucky, but got better. I had to reboot my work machine 5 times in the first hour. I think that's a personal record.

Dinner palns got scrubbed, came home and installed a remote-controlled deadbolt on the back door. It works! Then checked my tax paperwork... turns out I made $145,111 from amazon last year. I think I'll stop complaining about the $5k pay cut for a few days.

Then the DSS reciever screwed up in the middle of west wing again. Need to call and yell at them about that.
